Hearing evaluation

The hearing healthcare professional evaluates your hearing to determine the cause and degree of hearing loss.

There are a number of different hearing evaluation methods which will indicate whether there is an obvious cause of the hearing loss – such as fluid in the middle ear – and if medical treatment is required.

Often a hearing test is made to get an idea of the degree of hearing loss – how well you hear different tones at different intensity levels.

On the basis of this information, the hearing healthcare professional can give advice on the possible options, for example medical treatment or hearing aids.

This is how a hearing test is made

Hearing test
A hearing test is completely painless.

The hearing test can be made with headphones on the test subject’s ears or insert earphones in the test subject’s ear canals.

Different tones are then presented through the headphones/earphones at different volumes. The test subject has to indicate each time they hear a sound, for example by pressing a button or raising their hand.

The hearing healthcare professional makes a note of the lowest volume level at which each individual tone is audible.

Audiogram
The result of the hearing test is shown graphically in a so-called audiogram.

The audiogram depicts your hearing ability and is an important tool in diagnosing the hearing loss and determining the hearing aid model that best suits your hearing loss.
